THE $TEEN THESIS

BILLIONS
WILL NEET.

A thesis on life after work.

We were told to study, develop a skill, find a job, and build a life around being useful.

Now we are building machines to do the things we spent our lives preparing for.

What happens when producing more requires less human work?

AI does not need to replace every profession to change the economy. A company whose existing team can do more may simply stop hiring. The first disruption could be fewer opportunities to begin.

The ILO estimates that one quarter of global employment has some exposure to generative AI, although transformation remains more likely than outright replacement. ILO, 2025

The NEET thesis imagines where that pressure could lead: a future in which conventional careers play a smaller role in income, identity, and belonging.

“Billions will NEET” is a speculative cultural thesis. Its scale and timing remain uncertain.

The central question is who benefits.

If machines produce more while fewer people earn wages, abundance can coexist with insecurity. Productivity gains do not automatically reach the people whose labor becomes less valuable.

A future with more free time becomes freedom only when people can afford to live.

We will also need meaning beyond employment. People will still create, learn, care for others, build communities, and make things worth sharing. An employer does not grant those activities their value.

Most of us grew up expecting adulthood to follow a familiar pattern: study, get a job, move out, build a life. It’s unsettling to do what you were told and wonder whether that future is still waiting for you.

That’s the connection between $TEEN and $NEET. $TEEN is still growing up with that promise; $NEET is what comes after it. Today’s TEEN, tomorrow’s NEET. That could be the story of growing up in a world where AI does more of the work.

The hope is that there’s a good life on the other side: enough to live on, people who care about you, and time to find out what matters to you. We’ll still want to make things, help someone, fall in love, or just have a reason to look forward to tomorrow.

Billions will NEET.
They will still need a future.
